TL;DR
Engineer II, Propulsion - Engine Performance (Aerospace) (engine calibration/ECU): Owns calibration strategy and performance analysis for reciprocating engines powering the V-BAT platform with an accent on ECU tuning, fuel efficiency, and flight-test validation. Focus on designing test campaigns, analyzing torque and fuel-consumption data, troubleshooting root causes, and refining propulsion performance models.
Location: Dallas, Texas; on-site
Company
develops the V-BAT unmanned aerial vehicle platform and its propulsion systems.
What you will do
- Define engine calibration test plans, methodologies, and acceptance criteria for dynamometer, bench, and flight-test campaigns.
- Configure and tune ECUs, including fuel mapping, ignition timing, and injector phasing.
- Analyze torque, power, fuel consumption, and flight-test data to identify performance and hardware improvements.
- Lead engine-test troubleshooting and root-cause investigations for development and production teams.
- Represent engine calibration and performance in design reviews and cross-functional discussions with design, controls, and flight-test teams.
- Maintain calibration documentation, procedures, performance reports, and propulsion-system models.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 2–3 years of mechanical or aerospace engineering experience focused on engine performance or calibration.
- Deep hands-on experience with reciprocating piston engines.
- Experience with electronically controlled fuel injectors, fuel-injection systems, ECU configuration, and engine calibration.
- Ability to analyze torque, power, and fuel-consumption data and make calibration decisions.
- U.S. Citizenship or ability to comply with ITAR requirements.
Nice to have
- Experience with air-cooled or aviation two-stroke engines.
- Experience with dynamometer test cells, data-acquisition systems, and closed-loop engine-control logic.
- Proficiency in Python or MATLAB and experience developing automated engine-performance analysis tools.
- Experience with military propulsion systems, tactical aircraft, or high-performance aerospace platforms.
- FSAE competition success or an M.S. or Ph.D. in a related engineering discipline.
Culture & Benefits
- Full-time employee position.
- Hands-on work with engine hardware, fuel-injection systems, ECUs, and engine test stands.
- Collaboration with propulsion, design, controls, flight-test, development, and production teams.
