TL;DR
Propulsion Engineer II (Aerospace): Developing propulsion systems for sub-orbital VTVL vehicles from component sizing through design, analysis, fabrication, and testing with an accent on fluid-thermal modeling, solid modeling, and rocket engine integration. Focus on designing propulsion components, executing component and system tests, and analyzing cryogenic systems, turbomachinery, and combustion hardware.

Location: Mojave, California, United States; work in the Mojave office. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates moving to Mojave.

Salary: $90,000–$125,000 USD annual base salary.

What you will do

  • Design and test rocket propulsion systems for sub-orbital VTVL vehicles.
  • Size turbomachinery, combustion devices, valves, propellant feed systems, tanks, and pressurization systems.
  • Perform propulsion system trade studies using fluid-thermal models to inform design and operations.
  • Create solid models and component specifications for modeling, fabrication, vendors, and procurement.
  • Develop test plans, support rocket engine and component testing, execute tests, and analyze results.
  • Write technical reports and present findings to technical teams while collaborating with the Pittsburgh propulsion team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a similar field.
  • 2+ years of experience in propulsion system design, analysis, manufacturing, integration, or testing.
  • Experience with fluid and thermal design and analysis using system-level modeling tools such as GFSSP, Amesim, or Thermal Desktop.
  • Familiarity with solid modeling; SolidWorks is preferred.
  • Experience designing or specifying components for fluid systems.
  • Must be a U.S. Person eligible to obtain required ITAR or EAR export authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Experience with cryogenic propulsion systems, especially liquid oxygen and liquid methane.
  • Experience with additive manufacturing, rocket turbopumps, rocket test facilities, or fuel-handling equipment.
  • Programming experience with Python, C/C++, or MATLAB.
  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics, including conjugate heat transfer, preferably using Ansys Fluent.
  • Hands-on fabrication experience and willingness to work with pathfinder hardware.
