Senior Software Engineer, Backend, AI Labs (AI)

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada; authorization to work in Canada is required

Salary: CAD 200,000–255,000 annually, with potential eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus.

What you will do

• Build, test, operate, and maintain backend services and REST APIs for an agentic AI legal platform.
• Develop message-queue-based asynchronous processing with retries, idempotency, dead-letter handling, and failure recovery.
• Contribute to pipelines that ingest, parse, store, and index large volumes of legal documents.
• Implement authentication and authorization with OAuth2, OIDC, SAML, and role-based access control for multi-tenant environments.
• Design PostgreSQL schemas and queries, perform live migrations, and integrate Solr and Qdrant.
• Instrument services, monitor production health, participate in on-call rotation, review code, and collaborate on technical designs with AI, engineering, product, and security stakeholders.

Requirements

• 3+ years of professional experience building and operating production backend services, including incident response.
• Proficiency in Python or a comparable language with the ability to work primarily in Python.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure; relational databases; schema design; query optimization; and migrations.
• Experience with asynchronous or event-driven processing, REST APIs, automated testing, and continuous integration.
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and observability practices covering metrics, logging, and tracing.
• Must be authorized to work in Canada and provide proof of the right to work if required.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-volume document processing, Terraform, multi-tenant SaaS architectures, or AI/ML systems.
• Experience in legal technology or another regulated industry.
• Experience with OAuth2, OIDC, and SAML authentication and authorization standards.
