Senior Backend Engineer II (AI Native)

Location: Remote within the United States or Canada

Salary: $148,000–$216,000 USD for US-based candidates; $171,500–$201,000 CAD for Canada-based candidates

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain backend services for device connectivity, telemetry ingestion, health monitoring, and command/control operations.
• Define APIs and workflows for device features with firmware, mobile, and product teams.
• Deliver scalable and resilient microservices on AWS, including EKS, Lambda, DynamoDB, and SQS.
• Build and own high-throughput data pipelines using Kafka or similar streaming technologies.
• Improve observability, reliability, SLO compliance, CI/CD, and automation; participate in on-call and incident response.
• Use and orchestrate AI coding agents for specifications, code generation, testing, incident triage, reviews, and system design.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of experience building backend services with Java, Go, Python, or similar languages.
• Experience with microservices, RESTful API design, distributed systems, databases, caching, and event or streaming systems.
• Strong cloud infrastructure, container orchestration, and deployment experience, preferably with AWS.
• Hands-on experience with agentic AI workflows and daily use of AI coding tools for substantive engineering tasks.
• Ability to collaborate across teams, explain technical tradeoffs, and take ownership of production systems.

Nice to have

• Experience with IoT, telematics, high-frequency ingestion, or time-series data.
• Familiarity with Kafka, Kinesis, Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.
• Knowledge of SRE practices and automated testing frameworks.
