Principal Systems Engineer, Digital Lab Systems

Location: Norwood, Massachusetts, United States; 70/30 work model with significant in-office collaboration.

Salary: $145,900–$234,200 per year, plus potential bonus, incentive compensation, or equity.

What you will do

• Lead laboratory automation for QC testing and sample management, including high-throughput workflows using Hamilton liquid-handling platforms and VENUS software.
• Design, deploy, and optimize integrated automation solutions, dynamic scheduling platforms, automated workcells, and sample storage systems.
• Build data structures, pipelines, workflow architectures, and integrations connecting instruments, automation systems, LIMS platforms, and enterprise applications.
• Develop system integrations using REST APIs, web services, middleware, and connected laboratory architectures.
• Investigate automation deviations and technical issues, perform root cause analysis, implement corrective actions, and improve system reliability and performance.
• Lead system ownership, validation, lifecycle management, vendor coordination, documentation, training, and technical mentoring across laboratory automation initiatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering, computer science, biotechnology, robotics, or a related field.
• 8+ years of experience in laboratory automation or robotics, including liquid-handling systems and automation platforms.
• Experience with Hamilton platforms, including VENUS and BiOS, plus LIMS integration, databases, data structures, and middleware.
• Programming experience in Python, Java, C++, or a similar language; familiarity with REST/SOAP web services, distributed systems, and Git.
• Experience with AI/ML applications in laboratory or automation workflows and with regulated environments such as GCP, GLP, or ISO standards.
• Ability to work under the role’s 70/30 in-office model in Norwood, Massachusetts.
