Software Development Engineer II (Java)

Location: Hybrid in Welwyn Garden City, United Kingdom; 60% of the week is spent at office locations or local sites and the remainder remotely.

What you will do

• Develop features for a high-scale backend event-driven platform using Java and Spring Boot.
• Design, implement, test, review, and ship code in collaboration with senior engineers and teammates.
• Build and maintain automated test suites and applications deployed through CI/CD pipelines.
• Work with Kafka, Kubernetes, distributed services, and data-processing systems.
• Use New Relic and Splunk to monitor live systems and improve observability.
• Contribute to planning, requirements discussions, and development practice improvements.

Requirements

• Working knowledge of Java and an interest in backend development.
• Familiarity with object-oriented programming principles.
• Practical experience building event-driven services and/or REST APIs.
• Willingness to learn, collaborate, ask questions, seek feedback, and share knowledge.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to work in the hybrid Welwyn Garden City setup, with regular office or local-site attendance.

Nice to have

• Exposure to Spring Boot, NoSQL databases, or cloud services.
• Curiosity about performance, scalability, and observability in large-scale systems.
• Familiarity with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and containerisation.
• Experience with platforms such as Kafka.
