HPC AI Systems Administrator Intern (AI)

Location: Hybrid role with an average requirement of 2 days per week from an HPE office; fully onsite in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin for the duration of the internship.

Salary: USD 35.00–41.00 per hour in Minnesota.

What you will do

• Assist with inventory validation for HPC and AI laboratory systems.
• Review monitoring, logging, and vulnerability scanning coverage across a heterogeneous fleet.
• Identify gaps in agent deployment, log forwarding, scan inclusion, and system ownership records.
• Build scripts, reports, or dashboards for security visibility and remediation tracking.
• Document hardening expectations and practical system checklists.
• Work with system administrators to validate findings, prioritize follow-up work, and present project recommendations.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a degree program in cybersecurity, computer science, software engineering, information systems, computer engineering, network administration, or a related technical field.
• Comfortable working in Linux without a graphical interface, including navigating filesystems, editing configuration files, inspecting services and logs, managing users and permissions, and troubleshooting.
• Hands-on Linux or Unix experience through coursework, a personal lab, employment, internship, or another substantive Linux-based environment.
• Interest in cybersecurity, infrastructure, monitoring, or automation, with the ability to organize technical findings clearly in writing.
• Able to work fully onsite in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin for the internship duration.
• Willingness to learn from experienced administrators and ask questions early.

Nice to have

• Python or Bash scripting for automating repetitive data-gathering tasks.
• Experience with SSH keys, sudo, privilege boundaries, system services, package management, Git, or GitHub.
• Familiarity with logging, monitoring, vulnerability scanning, SIEM concepts, or tools such as Zabbix, Nessus, OpenSCAP, Wazuh, Splunk, Elastic, or Nmap.
• Exposure to Ansible, Puppet, Salt, TCP/IP networking, firewalls, DNS, or Linux permissions.
• Interest or experience in HPC, AI infrastructure, security coursework, security clubs, CCDC, CTFs, Security+, or Linux+.
