Senior Software Development Engineer (GenAI)

Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States

Salary: $171,500–$240,000 annually, with potential pay up to $274,500 based on sustained performance.

What you will do

• Design and evolve scalable generative AI services and multi-agent infrastructure.
• Own system design, low-level design, API contracts, data modeling, implementation, releases, and production operations.
• Build reusable, extensible, self-service platform capabilities for product and machine learning teams.
• Define grading standards for AI agents, MCP servers, and skills covering quality, safety, reliability, and production readiness.
• Design intelligent routing patterns, open-weight model deployments, and fine-tuning pipelines with the LLM Inference team.
• Track reliability, performance, adoption, operating cost, security, observability, and operational readiness.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 8+ years of relevant experience building and operating backend services and APIs with end-to-end ownership.
• Strong Python skills and production experience with FastAPI or similar modern web frameworks.
• Experience with system design, API design, data modeling, public or hybrid cloud environments, and AWS or similar cloud services.
• Experience with at least one data store, such as Aurora PostgreSQL or Elasticsearch.
• Familiarity with AI-driven systems, LLM capabilities, embeddings, or RAG patterns.

Nice to have

• Experience operating Python backend APIs at scale with performance tuning and resilience patterns.
• Hands-on experience with RAG, vector stores, LangChain, LlamaIndex, LangGraph, LangSmith, or Langfuse.
• Experience with prompt and retrieval design, embeddings management, Elasticsearch vector search, Aurora PostgreSQL, and platform guardrails.
• Background building internal platforms, SDKs, or shared services adopted by multiple product teams.
• Experience with workflow and agent orchestration tools such as n8n or Flowise and safety-by-design practices.
