Hiring range: $124,000–$186,000 USD annually

What you will do

  • Serve as the materials and processes discipline expert for weld materials and processes.
  • Qualify weld materials and products for flight and reuse.
  • Develop system requirements and workflows for damage-tolerant design, inspection, flight qualification, and reuse.
  • Create, implement, and maintain technical specifications and engineering standards.
  • Drive weld process development and optimization with weld engineering.
  • Collaborate with materials, laboratory, design, manufacturing, quality, fracture control, and leadership teams to resolve technical risks and enable production scale-up.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant materials engineering experience; leveling may be adjusted for candidates with more experience.
  • Experience solving process-structure-property-performance problems for weld materials.
  • Experience with aerospace materials and processes activities, including material selection, weld development and qualification, damage tolerance, inspection, risk assessment, and failure analysis.
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines and work in a fast-paced environment developing and iterating launch vehicle products.

Nice to have

  • Experience with weld materials and processes for reusable aerospace parts.
  • Expertise in friction stir and fusion welding, including laser, orbital tube, electron beam, GTAW, and GMAW welding.
  • Knowledge of AWS D17.1, AWS D17.2, or equivalent weld process qualification requirements for nickel, ferrous, aluminum, or titanium alloys.
  • Experience with welded aerospace products and downstream processes such as heat treatment, coatings, passivation, and precision cleaning.
  • Knowledge of non-destructive evaluation, corrosion, fatigue, damage tolerance, and statistical experimental design.
