Staff Software Engineer (Java/JavaScript)

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States; primary location at 815 Eleventh Ave. Walmart emphasizes working together in person at its campuses.

Annual salary: $143,000–$286,000, plus potential performance bonuses and stock.

What you will do

• Analyze, classify, and assess business and technical requirements, solution gaps, risks, and trade-offs.
• Design complex software components and convert high-level designs into detailed technical solutions.
• Develop and configure software using Java, JavaScript, React, React Native, Node, Spring, and appropriate coding frameworks.
• Define test strategies, select testing tools, cover functional scenarios, and perform regression testing.
• Monitor delivery milestones and CI/CD adherence, troubleshoot defects, and resolve performance bottlenecks.
• Lead engineering standards, mentor teammates, support operational excellence, and drive execution of business plans.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, computer information systems, or a related field with 4 years of experience, or 6 years of software engineering experience.
• Proven software engineering experience, with 8+ years preferred for the role, including Java and JavaScript-based systems.
• Experience with CI/CD automation, Agile delivery, feature flags, backward compatibility, performance profiling, performance testing, and load-generation tools.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, cloud deployment, multi-cloud environments, containerization, Docker, and Kubernetes.
• Strong problem-solving, debugging, performance analysis, communication, and independent ownership skills.
• Ability to work at the Sunnyvale, California location and collaborate in person.

Nice to have

• Master's degree in a relevant computer science or engineering field.
• Cloud platform certifications.
• Experience with WCAG 2.2 AA, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility practices.
