Senior Occupational Safety & Process Safety Management Specialist (Biotech)

Location: Leiden, South Holland, Netherlands

Base pay: €64,000–€103,040 per year

What you will do

• Develop, implement, and maintain occupational safety and process safety management programs across laboratories, production, engineering, and capital projects.
• Lead or coordinate process hazard analyses, HAZOPs, LOPA studies, management of change, and workplace and process risk assessments.
• Strengthen safe-work systems covering permits to work, confined spaces, hot work, lockout/tagout, energy control, and contractor safety.
• Lead or support incident investigations, root cause analyses, corrective actions, audits, inspections, and EHS reporting.
• Advise on safety during design, commissioning, qualification, and change-control activities.
• Deliver practical training and coach operational leaders, subject-matter experts, and standard owners to build a proactive safety culture.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in safety engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, occupational health and safety, environmental science, biology, or a related field; a master’s degree is preferred.
• Completed HVK qualification or an equivalent senior occupational safety qualification.
• At least 7 years of progressive occupational safety and process safety experience in biotech, pharmaceutical, chemical, manufacturing, or another high-hazard technical environment.
• Experience with HAZOPs, LOPA studies, risk assessments, hazard evaluations, incident investigations, occupational safety legislation, process safety principles, and ISO 45001.
• Practical knowledge of laboratory and production safety, mechanical and electrical safety, energy isolation, and process safety barriers.
• Fluency in Dutch and English, spoken and written, is required.

Nice to have

• NEBOSH diploma, additional HVK-related certifications, or other recognized international safety qualifications.
• Experience with ISO 14001, cleanroom, aseptic, GMP, biotech, or pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
• Familiarity with safety instrumented systems, risk-based design, ATEX, machine safety, and project process safety documentation.
• Experience managing contractor, construction, and site safety during project execution.
