TL;DR
Observability Engineer (Monitoring and Logging): Maintaining and extending monitoring and observability solutions for local and central government applications with an accent on metrics, logs, traces, alerting, and platform reliability. Focus on designing monitoring for applications, databases, and infrastructure, automating with PowerShell, Python, and Terraform, and identifying gaps across complex systems.
Location: Bracknell, UK; remote or hybrid depending on location. Candidates must have a pre-existing right to work and travel within the UK and obtain UK Security Clearance.

What you will do
- Configure agents, collectors, monitoring probes, dashboards, alerting thresholds, log retention policies, and data quality controls.
- Manage monitoring platform upgrades, patches, maintenance, availability, and performance.
- Design and implement monitoring for applications, databases, servers, and modern technology environments.
- Refine monitoring standards, onboarding processes, policies, and integrations with ISM tools and reporting dashboards.
- Drive service improvement by reviewing monitoring effectiveness, identifying gaps, and recommending new observability capabilities.
- Collaborate with application owners, infrastructure teams, product SMEs, and service managers while providing documentation and knowledge transfer.
Requirements
- Proven experience as an Observability Engineer, Monitoring Specialist, SRE, or Platform Engineer.
- Strong knowledge of monitoring, logging, and alerting using tools such as Splunk, Datadog, or similar platforms.
- Hands-on experience instrumenting applications with metrics, logs, and traces.
- Understanding of on-premises or cloud infrastructure, networking basics, databases, and API integrations.
- Ability to analyse complex systems and communicate clear, actionable recommendations.
- Experience with automation using PowerShell, Python, or Terraform.
Nice to have
- Knowledge of ITIL incident, problem, and change processes.
- Experience in public-sector or local-authority environments.
- Experience with ManageEngine.
- Knowledge of AIOps and AIOps implementation approaches.
