Legal Counsel, Corporate & Business Affairs (Data Privacy)

Location: Fully remote, with at least 3 hours of overlap with an East Africa timezone. Employment is currently limited to eligible countries. Visa sponsorship for employment in the US or UK is not available.

Base salary: $114,660 annually in the United States; £77,600 annually in the United Kingdom; $83,820 annually in Kenya. Compensation for other countries is benchmarked according to local location and cost of living.

What you will do

• Build the Business Affairs capability and serve as a primary legal partner to Partnerships, Fundraising, People, Finance, Communications, Technology, Product, Grants Management, and public affairs.
• Structure, draft, and negotiate corporate partnerships, funding arrangements, technology and vendor agreements, gift agreements, and strategic transactions.
• Advise on charitable giving, planned gifts, donor restrictions, fundraising disclosures, lobbying, advocacy, and political-activity requirements.
• Lead legal strategy for Data Partnerships, MNO data, remote enablement, and operating models spanning multiple programs and countries.
• Develop data-sharing agreements, NDAs, MoUs, privacy approaches, consent models, and responsible data-use frameworks while supporting regulatory and government engagement.
• Build templates, playbooks, escalation paths, and repeatable legal processes while coordinating external and local counsel.

Requirements

• Qualification as an attorney in at least one jurisdiction with relevant post-qualification experience.
• Strong corporate, commercial, transactional, data privacy, and data protection experience.
• Experience structuring and negotiating complex partnerships, funding arrangements, and agreements.
• Ability to interpret unfamiliar legal and regulatory frameworks and provide practical, risk-aware advice.
• Experience advising multiple functions, managing a varied portfolio independently, and directing specialist advisors.
• Fluent English and availability for at least 3 hours of overlap with an East Africa timezone are required.

Nice to have

• Experience with data-protection authorities, telecom regulators, governments, MNOs, or other public authorities.
• Experience with technology-enabled products, data-intensive operating models, or multiple jurisdictions.
• Privacy or data-protection certification.
• Experience advising charitable organizations on fundraising, planned giving, bequests, donor restrictions, or non-cash gifts.
• Experience in international development, humanitarian response, or another mission-driven organization.
