Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer (Networking Systems)

Location: Hybrid, with an expectation of working from an HPE office approximately 2 days per week; United States, California

Salary: USD 153,500–310,500 annual base salary in California, excluding possible variable incentives.

What you will do

• Lead mechanical architecture, design, development, qualification, production release, and field support for complex networking systems and chassis platforms.
• Provide technical leadership for mechanical packaging, manufacturability, reliability, serviceability, cost, compliance, and customer requirements across multiple programs.
• Evaluate and integrate advanced cooling, liquid cooling, interconnect, material, and manufacturing technologies.
• Perform hands-on CAD reviews, tolerance analysis, prototype evaluation, laboratory testing, failure analysis, and root-cause investigations.
• Lead cross-functional design reviews with Electrical, Thermal, Signal Integrity, Reliability, Manufacturing, Operations, and Supply Chain teams.
• Guide suppliers, support customer and manufacturing escalations, develop corrective actions, mentor engineers, and contribute to future platform planning.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• 12+ years of experience in electromechanical product development.
• Expertise in 3D solid modeling; SolidWorks experience is preferred.
• Experience with complex chassis and system-level mechanical design, tolerance analysis, GD&T, stack-up analysis, structural analysis, FEA, and ECAD-MCAD integration.
• Knowledge of sheet metal, machining, castings, extrusions, plastics, tooling, volume manufacturing, thermal design, and liquid cooling.
• Understanding of NEBS, EMI, EMC, safety, product cost drivers, supplier capabilities, and the complete product development lifecycle.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Experience with networking, server, storage, telecommunications, or high-performance computing systems.
• Experience with EPDM or equivalent PLM systems.
• Experience leading complex cross-functional development programs.
