Staff Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote; applicants should be located in Spain, Sweden, the UK, Ireland, or Germany

Base compensation in Germany: €109,709–€131,651 per year

What you will do

• Design, implement, test, and operate backend services for context ingestion, indexing, storage, retrieval orchestration, API access, source configuration, and administration.
• Build the architecture for a scalable multi-tenant SaaS service, including tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, background jobs, and reliable service boundaries.
• Create APIs and service interfaces for AI agents, MCP tools, CLIs, and internal applications to retrieve context, provenance, confidence signals, and warnings.
• Collaborate across product and infrastructure to balance rapid experimentation with long-term reliability as the project moves from prototype to production.
• Instrument services with metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and dashboards, using observability tools to improve system reliability.
• Shape architecture, storage choices, API contracts, deployment patterns, and engineering practices for a new product area.

Requirements

• Strong experience building production-grade, user-facing software systems.
• Practical experience with AI technologies, LLMs, prompt engineering, and GenAI-powered applications.
• Experience delivering software into production and supporting systems actively used by customers.
• Exposure to cloud-native environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Experience using observability tools to understand and troubleshoot system behavior.
• Ability to work autonomously through ambiguity, communicate effectively, iterate quickly, and make pragmatic architectural decisions.

Nice to have

• Experience with agent frameworks or multi-agent workflows.
• Experience as a data analyst or with data platforms such as Looker, Tableau, Power BI, Snowflake, or Databricks.
• Experience building tools for data engineering.
