Software Engineer II or III (AI)

Location: San Diego, California, US; onsite. Minimal domestic travel required.

Salary: $130,000–$160,000 base pay per year.

What you will do

• Own software features from requirements and architecture through implementation, integration, testing, delivery, and sustainment.
• Build full-stack applications with Vue-based interfaces, Python backend services, APIs, and relational or NoSQL data stores.
• Design and integrate distributed services using RPC, publish/subscribe messaging, Protocol Buffers, and service-based architectures.
• Integrate software with external devices and hardware through serial interfaces, network protocols, and device APIs.
• Deploy and troubleshoot software across Linux, Windows, physical, virtualized, multi-VM, secure, and air-gapped environments.
• Develop Ansible automation, containerized applications with Podman, and practical AI agents and LLM workflows for engineering and automation.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM field.
• At least 5 years of professional software development experience.
• Experience with Python or similar languages, modern frontend frameworks, RESTful APIs, Bash or PowerShell, Git, databases, and software design fundamentals.
• Experience with Linux development and troubleshooting, distributed application communication, hardware or external-system integration, containerization, and configuration automation.
• U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance are required.
• Onsite work in San Diego, California is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with LLMs, generative AI, AI agents, agentic workflows, tool calling, MCP, RAG, or local AI infrastructure.
• Experience with Protobuf, gRPC, publish/subscribe systems, message brokers, air-gapped deployments, virtualization, networking, and hardware interfaces.
• Familiarity with CI/CD, DevOps, cybersecurity, secure software development, system hardening, vulnerability management, or DoD environments.
• Active or previously held DoD security clearance, an advanced degree, or relevant technical certifications.
