Staff Software Engineer, PostgreSQL

Location: 100% remote from anywhere in the U.S. In-person office hubs are available in Boston, New York City, and Paris.

Salary: $170,000–$190,000 per year base salary, plus equity, PTO, and other benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture and design of complex systems within the Datastore data platform.
• Design and scale PostgreSQL data models, Kafka-driven event pipelines, and GraphQL APIs for clinical and scientific data.
• Own dataset snapshot pipelines into the data warehouse and develop integrations, services, tools, and dashboards.
• Debug and profile cross-system problems while improving structure, test coverage, tooling, documentation, and operational robustness.
• Draft RFCs, guide technical decisions, and collaborate with product, scientific, clinical, platform, application, and support teams.
• Mentor engineers, provide feedback, contribute to planning, and lead engineering practices within the team.

Requirements

• 7+ years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years with data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.
• Strong SQL and production PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, indexes, query plans, query tuning, and row-level security.
• Experience with data streaming and event processing using Kafka or an equivalent technology.
• Proficiency in Julia or Python and experience deploying services in containers; familiarity with Kubernetes and Terraform or Helm.
• Experience with data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering, plus a track record of mentoring and improving team practices.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently in asynchronous, remote-friendly environments.

Nice to have

• GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript with Node.js experience.
• Deep PostgreSQL operations expertise, including query planning, EXPLAIN ANALYZE, replication, backups, connection pooling, vacuum behavior, extensions, and upgrades.
• Experience with event pipeline replay, idempotency, consumer lag, zero-downtime migrations, dual writes, backfills, and verification.
• Experience with Julia or interest in learning it.
• Experience using LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production.
