Staff Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: Remote within the United States

Salary: $130,000–$150,000 per year

What you will do

• Lead the design and delivery of platform capabilities for tenant onboarding, schema management, developer experience, and Event Bus integration.
• Establish reusable integration patterns using lightweight clients, native Kafka producers, and protocol-specific listeners.
• Support producer and consumer teams across Veterans Affairs and convert integration lessons into templates, documentation, automation, and platform standards.
• Partner with DevOps engineers to automate operational work and expand platform capabilities.
• Plan complex technical roadmaps, reduce technical debt, improve testing and documentation, and participate in on-call support.
• Mentor engineers, communicate architectural tradeoffs, participate in technical interviews, and support client-facing demonstrations and proposals.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and 9+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent experience.
• Expert-level experience with at least one major technology stack and the ability to lead complex technical work independently.
• Ability to contribute across Java, Ruby, Node, Python, and Go.
• Strong understanding of Kubernetes architecture and hands-on experience with Argo CD or equivalent continuous delivery tools.
• Experience building and maintaining CI/CD workflows with GitHub Actions or similar tools.
• Experience designing, building, or supporting distributed production systems and communicating complex technical decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience with Apache Kafka or another distributed event-streaming platform.
• Experience with internal developer platforms, developer tooling, or paved-road solutions.
• Experience supporting integrations across multiple teams, services, or technology stacks.
• Experience in government, healthcare, or financial services, or familiarity with FedRAMP, FISMA, ATO, or similar compliance frameworks.
