Staff Data Engineer (AWS)

Location: Canada; candidates must be based in Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver, or Kitchener-Waterloo and attend the office at least one day per week according to the department schedule.

Salary: CAD 169,200–228,900 annual base salary, with a midpoint of CAD 199,100.

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain scalable batch and real-time data pipelines, including data ingestion, CDC, transformation, and data activation.
• Lead the architecture and hands-on development of foundational data integration components and self-service tooling.
• Establish testing, reliability, SLA, disaster recovery, monitoring, logging, lineage, auditing, and governance standards.
• Enable engineering, analytics, data science, and product teams to access and use trusted data efficiently.
• Partner with technical leaders and Technical Program Managers on roadmaps, cross-team initiatives, and platform improvements.
• Mentor data engineers, provide technical direction, and participate in a one-week-at-a-time on-call rotation with occasional weekend support.

Requirements

• Hands-on experience with batch and real-time processing, lakehouse or warehouse management, large-scale transformation, serialization, orchestration, and dimensional modeling.
• Experience designing scalable, maintainable, and high-performance systems using containerization, CI/CD, and API development.
• Strong AWS experience applied to data engineering solutions.
• Expertise in software design, system architecture, coding, technical leadership, and mentoring.
• Experience with infrastructure as code, including Terraform or CloudFormation, plus observability and reliability practices.
• Must be based in Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver, or Kitchener-Waterloo and able to attend the office at least one day per week.

Nice to have

• Experience with ML platforms and distributed compute frameworks such as Ray, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, React, GraphQL, or API performance optimization.
• Experience building developer tooling or shared platforms for multiple engineering domains.
• Knowledge of data privacy, security, and compliance in cloud-based data environments.
