Senior Software Engineer (m/f/d) Data

Location: Berlin, Germany; 80% office presence and 20% mobile working

What you will do

• Build, test, deploy, and operate production data products, pipelines, services, and modeled datasets.
• Apply backend engineering practices, including clean code, APIs, automated testing, observability, and operational ownership.
• Design schemas, data contracts, and domain models that support safe evolution, late data, and real business requirements.
• Build data quality checks, lineage, freshness monitoring, documentation, and clear ownership.
• Partner with product, engineering, data science, analysts, and other stakeholders to deliver reliable data products.
• Optimize systems for reliability, performance, and cost efficiency while mentoring junior and mid-level engineers.

Requirements

• Senior-level experience delivering and operating backend systems, data products, APIs, services, or pipelines end-to-end in a cloud environment.
• Strong Python skills and experience writing clean, tested, and maintainable software; ability to quickly learn Go.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and sound judgment around APIs, schemas, data contracts, ownership boundaries, and compute costs.
• Experience or transferable expertise in data modeling, schema evolution, incremental and idempotent processing, and late data handling.
• Ability to treat quality checks, lineage, freshness, observability, and documentation as production deliverables.
• Degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent expertise demonstrated through experience and impact.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud data platforms, lakehouse platforms, and high-throughput processing.
• Background as a senior backend engineer moving into data engineering or as a data engineer with substantial backend experience.
