Process Safety and Risk Management (PS&RM) and Machine Safety (MS) Lead Engineer

Location: Niigata, Japan; domestic and international travel required.

What you will do

• Facilitate Process Hazard Analyses, Layers of Protection Analyses, and Dust Hazard Analyses for revalidations and capital projects.
• Provide process safety expertise, guide the application of RAGAGEPs, and lead risk-reduction initiatives for high-hazard materials, technologies, and operations.
• Partner with site leadership, engineering, and EHS teams to improve process safety performance and support audits, compliance reviews, and assessments.
• Contribute to incident investigations, including classification, root cause analysis, and enterprise trend analysis.
• Support machine safety programs, equipment upgrades, troubleshooting, and best-practice implementation.
• Provide technical oversight during procurement, fabrication, and installation and improve corporate machine safety and mechanical design standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 10+ years of experience in process safety and risk management in high-hazard manufacturing or chemical processing, including at least 5 years in plant technical support or equipment and systems design.
• Experience with HAZOP, LOPA, PHA, DHA, process safety auditing, compliance assurance, and management system implementation.
• Background in machine safety evaluations, design reviews, assessments, engineering documentation, and capital project execution.
• Knowledge of international process safety standards, RAGAGEPs, ANSI, ISO, EN standards, and the hirify.global S1M Machine Safety Management Program.
• Fluency in written and spoken Japanese and English is required. Ability to lead cross-functionally, communicate effectively, and travel domestically and internationally.

Nice to have

• Certification as a Process Safety Professional, such as CCPS or equivalent.
• Experience in project engineering and capital project risk reviews.
• Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence in global, multicultural environments.
