Director Engineering, Adtech & Marketplace (Retail Media)

Location: Cologne, Germany; remote work possible. Work from anywhere in the EU is available for up to 20 days per year.

What you will do

• Set the engineering direction across Retail Media and Marketplace, deciding where platforms should converge or remain separate.
• Lead an organisation of approximately 40 engineers across 5–7 teams through two Engineering Managers.
• Develop managers and teams while establishing clear ownership, autonomy, and organisational structure.
• Own delivery, reliability, architecture, technical debt, and overall engineering maturity.
• Co-own roadmaps with Product and Commercial leadership and connect engineering priorities to take rate, advertiser ROAS, seller economics, and contribution margin.
• Lead relationships with external platforms, integrators, and agencies, including build/buy/partner decisions, integrations, SLAs, and vendor performance.

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience leading multiple engineering teams through managers or leads.
• Experience leading organisations through significant change, such as merging domains, introducing new scope, or replacing a platform.
• Experience developing commercial B2B platforms such as marketplaces, retail media, adtech, payments, or seller and partner platforms.
• Experience with high-traffic and transactional systems.
• Strong technical judgement, commercial thinking, and the ability to connect engineering decisions to business outcomes.
• Strong English communication skills are essential.
