Materials Engineer (Nuclear Materials)

Location: Onsite at the facility in Torrance, California, in the Los Angeles area. The role requires support for critical milestones, including long hours and weekends when necessary.

Salary: $115,000–$150,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

• Develop and qualify materials for reactor systems, including lifetime testing, property evaluation, and collaboration with external institutions.
• Design and conduct physical, thermal, and mechanical tests that replicate reactor operating conditions.
• Apply statistical methods to evaluate the effects of process variables and environmental conditions on material properties.
• Characterize materials and investigate the root causes of failure modes.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, neutronics, mechanical, testing, and quality engineering teams to integrate materials and define operating limits.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of experience in materials engineering.
• Proficiency in optical and electron microscopy and mechanical property evaluation.
• Ability to learn quickly and develop expertise across ceramics and metallic alloys.
• Must satisfy U.S. Government export-control eligibility requirements: U.S. citizenship or nationality, lawful permanent residency, refugee or asylee status, or eligibility to obtain the required authorizations.
• Ability to work onsite in Torrance and support long hours or weekends when required by critical milestones.

Nice to have

• At least 3 years of experience working in an integrated production environment.
• Knowledge of radiation effects in materials.
• Experience with stainless steel, nickel-based superalloys, ceramics, or coatings.
• Strong communication skills for cross-functional technical collaboration.
