Principal Software Engineer (Distributed Systems)

Location: San Francisco, hybrid

Salary: $220,000–$250,000 target base salary per year, plus equity

What you will do

• Own a major technical area of Ray Core, define the roadmap, identify key technical problems, and drive execution through production.
• Lead technically complex projects spanning multiple engineers, teams, and organizations.
• Set technical direction and make architectural decisions for distributed-computing infrastructure.
• Design, build, and evolve distributed-systems primitives for execution, scheduling, resource management, fault tolerance, concurrency, networking, storage, and performance.
• Implement and debug systems-oriented code while mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar.
• Shape the long-term architecture and evolution of Ray Core as workloads and scale grow.

Requirements

• 6+ years of software engineering experience with increasing technical ownership.
• Experience leading substantial projects end to end, including problem definition, roadmapping, architecture, implementation, and production ownership.
• Deep experience with distributed systems and computer systems, rather than primarily integrating existing platforms.
• Strong systems-programming experience in C++, Rust, Java, or similar lower-level languages.
• Strong understanding of multithreading and concurrency, distributed coordination, resource management, fault tolerance, performance, or networking.
• Experience mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar of engineering teams.

Nice to have

• Experience with databases, streaming systems, distributed runtimes, operating systems, schedulers, storage systems, Spark, Kafka, or similar infrastructure.
• Contributions to open-source infrastructure projects.
