Principal Mechanical Engineer (Opto-Mechanical)

Location: Irvine, California, United States; onsite role. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. Work visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $130,000–$200,000 per year, plus eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus.

What you will do

• Design, analyze, document, procure, and test high-precision opto-mechanical products, systems, tooling, fixtures, and packaging.
• Use ANSYS to perform and summarize structural, thermal, optical performance, sensitivity, and other FEA analyses.
• Use NX and SolidWorks for mechanical system design, documentation, reverse engineering, and production support.
• Conduct feasibility studies, tolerance analyses, design testing, prototyping, and design reviews.
• Lead projects from deliverable definition through implementation across fabrication, cleaning, coating, and testing operations.
• Mentor engineers and may direct support personnel working on detailed design, testing, and prototypes.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
• At least 7 years of experience designing tooling, fixtures, or systems with robust and repeatable precision mechanisms.
• At least 5 years of experience performing FEA with iterative design feedback.
• Competence with ANSYS, SolidWorks, NX, tolerance analysis, DFM/DFA, and engineering documentation.
• Familiarity with metal fabrication methods including CNC machining, lathes, and EDM.
• Ability to mentor engineers and deliver work in cross-functional, high-paced production environments.

Nice to have

• Experience with laser systems, precision optical components, complex opto-mechanical assemblies, or metrology tools in production.
• Knowledge of optical design and ZEMAX, motion control, optical power generation, or detection instrumentation.
• Experience with SolidWorks PDM, Agile, SAP, DFMEA, project management, and technical writing.
• Master’s degree or equivalent advanced training.
