Principal Design Engineer (AI)

Location: Canada. Remote-eligible roles may be based anywhere in Canada or the US; Toronto-area employees living within 65 km of the downtown headquarters collaborate in-office Monday through Thursday.

Salary: $140,000–$182,200 CAD per year, excluding bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Own and evolve the design system, including component authoring, theming architecture, and parity between design libraries and production code.
• Build design-to-code tooling such as token pipelines, plugins, and automated checks that identify system drift.
• Develop infrastructure that enables AI agents to use the design system correctly, including agent skills, reference documentation, and evaluation systems.
• Ship production React and TypeScript code for the design system and the product surfaces that consume it.
• Maintain cross-platform consistency across web, iOS, and Android while setting accessibility standards for product teams.
• Drive architectural decisions, document AI workflows, and align designers, engineers, and technical leads.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in a hybrid design/frontend, frontend engineering, product design, or design engineering role.
• Shipped work demonstrating ownership of both design and implementation, including authorship of a design system.
• Production experience with React and TypeScript, including component API design.
• Advanced Figma experience with variables, modes, component properties, and design-to-code mapping.
• Daily practical use of Claude Code or an equivalent, including agent skills, MCP servers, and output benchmarking.
• Strong ability to handle edge cases, empty and error states, accessibility, technical constraints, documentation, and cross-functional decision-making.

Nice to have

• Native iOS or Android experience.
• Node and TypeScript tooling engineering, including CLIs, build scripts, token pipelines, and CI automation.
• Server-driven UI development.
• Health tech or regulated-industry experience.
• Experience designing evaluations or benchmarking AI output quality.
