Architectural Historian

Location: Anywhere in the United States, or from hirify.global offices in Minneapolis, Minnesota, or Appleton, Wisconsin. Remote, in-office, and hybrid arrangements are available. Approximately 20% travel is required for field surveys and site visits.

Salary: $72,100–$111,300 per year, depending on qualifications and experience; bonus eligible.

What you will do

• Coordinate cultural resources compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act, National Environmental Policy Act, state environmental regulations, and related laws.
• Conduct historic research, property documentation, field surveys, photographic surveys, and viewshed impact assessments.
• Evaluate individual resources and districts for National Register of Historic Places eligibility.
• Write architectural descriptions, property histories, historic contexts, statements of significance, effect determinations, and technical reports.
• Manage architectural history, historic preservation, preservation planning, and multidisciplinary projects while engaging clients, agencies, stakeholders, and the public.
• Train and mentor staff and maintain qualifications to serve as a Principal Investigator in states where fieldwork or project reviews are conducted.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Historic Preservation, Public History, Heritage Conservation, Architectural History, or a related field plus 3+ years of relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree plus 5+ years of relevant experience.
• Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards under 36 CFR Part 61 for Architectural History.
• At least 3 years of experience with NHPA, NEPA, historic property identification surveys, and evaluations under National Register Criteria for Evaluation.
• Experience managing cultural resources projects from contract award through agency concurrence and working in a consulting environment.
• Strong research, writing, communication, project management, and client-service skills.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States; employment authorization is verified through E-Verify.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of the history and architectural history of the Midwest and Eastern United States.
• Experience with visual landscape analysis, utility infrastructure impact assessments, and evaluation of setting, feeling, and association.
• Experience with Historic American Buildings Survey and Historic American Engineering Record documentation, historic contexts, NRHP eligibility determinations, and effects assessments.
