Senior Payroll Analyst

Location: San Francisco, California, United States; remote work flexibility is available for eligible US locations.

Annual base salary: $100,000–$138,000 USD for candidates in California excluding the San Francisco Bay Area, Colorado, Illinois, New York, and Washington; an additional range of $90,000–$123,000 USD is listed.

What you will do

• Execute complex semi-monthly multi-state US payroll cycles, including salary, commissions, bonuses, retroactive adjustments, and termination payments.
• Process and reconcile equity transactions, including RSUs, ESPP, and NQSOs, and manage off-cycle payroll runs.
• Administer benefits deductions, 401(k) contributions, FSA/HSA deductions, wage garnishments, and taxable fringe benefits.
• Manage federal, state, and local payroll tax compliance, tax notices, and year-end W-2 reconciliation.
• Perform pre- and post-payroll audits under SOX controls and support internal and external financial audits.
• Automate reporting and reconciliation workflows and provide Tier-2 support through ServiceNow.

Requirements

• 5+ years of progressive, end-to-end multi-state US payroll experience.
• Advanced proficiency with Workday Payroll and Workday HCM.
• Experience with payroll vendor reporting tools, ServiceNow, and time-tracking systems.
• Advanced Excel skills, including VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, nested logic, and pivot tables.
• Strong knowledge of US labor laws, FLSA classifications, multi-state withholding, reciprocal agreements, and payroll accounting.
• Strong analytical, communication, and independent problem-solving skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with Alteryx or other workflow automation tools.
• Certified Payroll Professional certification or equivalent payroll accreditation.
• Experience in a high-growth SaaS, technology, or large public enterprise environment.
