Staff Backend Software Engineer, Developer Productivity Engineering (AI)

Location: Mountain View, California, United States; flexible hybrid work model

Salary: $207,000–$290,000 annual base salary, plus bonuses, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Set the technical direction, architecture, and multi-year platform roadmap for Infrastructure and Developer Productivity.
• Architect and operate multi-tenant Kubernetes clusters on Google Cloud across CPU, GPU, and TPU workloads.
• Build self-service CI/CD, build, test, release, deployment, rollback, and on-demand testing systems.
• Develop reproducible infrastructure with Terraform or similar tools, including policy checks, secrets management, and container vulnerability scanning.
• Design secure AI tooling sandboxes and execution environments for automated agents, testing, and code inspection.
• Establish observability, SLAs/SLOs, disaster recovery practices, and engineering standards while mentoring engineers and leading design reviews.

Requirements

• 8+ years of production experience in infrastructure, SRE, DevOps, developer productivity, or platform engineering.
• 2+ years as a formal Tech Lead or Staff Engineer directing technical roadmaps and architecture across multiple teams.
• Advanced production expertise with Kubernetes, GKE, container networking, and multi-tenant cloud architectures.
• Deep experience with Terraform, Pulumi, or comparable declarative Infrastructure-as-Code tools.
• Experience building large-scale automated build, test, and release pipelines and self-service internal developer platforms.
• Ability to identify developer friction and deliver platforms that increase deployment frequency and reduce MTTR.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI agents, LLM evaluations, secure sandboxes, or GPU orchestration.
• Exposure to BigQuery, Spark, Kafka, Ray, or distributed simulation environments.
• Knowledge of Alphabet infrastructure primitives or experience operationalizing an X moonshot.
• Experience building high-throughput platform tooling at a large-scale technology company.
