TL;DR
Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering Intern (Spacecraft): Supporting the design, analysis, testing, assembly, and integration of mechanical systems for orbital solar power satellites with an accent on structural design, thermal management, and flight hardware. Focus on developing test plans, analyzing hardware data, resolving cross-functional integration issues, and preparing engineering documentation.

Location: On-site in Kent, Washington, United States for the full duration of the Summer 2027 internship

Salary: $1,800 per week

Develops modular, scalable satellites for space-based solar energy, on-orbit computing, and secure optical data transport.

What you will do

  • Support the design and analysis of structural, mechanical, and thermal spacecraft subsystems using CAD and engineering analysis methods.
  • Develop and execute mechanical hardware test plans, including structural, vibration, thermal, and deployment testing.
  • Build, assemble, integrate, and test flight and engineering development hardware in the laboratory.
  • Analyze test data and prepare technical reports covering findings, anomalies, and design recommendations.
  • Collaborate with electrical, software, and systems engineers to resolve integration issues.
  • Support fabrication, machine shop activities, engineering documentation, and progress presentations.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Coursework or hands-on project experience in mechanical design, structural analysis, or thermal systems.
  • Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks or CATIA.
  • Strong fundamentals in statics, dynamics, materials, and/or thermodynamics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work hands-on with hardware in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Must be available for on-site work in Kent, Washington throughout the Summer 2027 internship and meet U.S. ITAR eligibility requirements.

Nice to have

  • Experience with spacecraft, aerospace structures, or other flight hardware programs.
  • Familiarity with FEA tools such as ANSYS or Nastran.
  • Exposure to machining, fabrication, or hands-on prototyping.
