Avionics Mechanical Engineering Intern (Summer 2027)

Location: On-site in Redondo Beach, CA for the 12-week internship from May/June through August/September 2027

Compensation: $32.00 per hour; overtime may be required and is paid.

What you will do

• Evaluate requirements, develop mechanical designs, and generate drawings for avionics systems and devices.
• Conduct design reviews and collaborate with electrical, propulsion, GNC, and vehicle structures engineers.
• Design for manufacturability and coordinate with suppliers to fabricate parts.
• Perform hand calculations and FEA to predict system performance, including structural modes and thermal behavior.
• Develop and document build processes and improve work instructions with technicians.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience designing mechanical components in CAD software.
• Understanding of static loads and heat-transfer methods.
• Understanding of fabrication methods such as CNC milling and 3D printing.
• Familiarity with basic shop tools and hands-on work.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, learn new skills, communicate technical challenges, explain rationale, and resolve concerns.
• Must be willing and able to work on-site in Redondo Beach, CA for the full internship.
• Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual, or eligible to obtain the authorizations required under ITAR regulations.

Nice to have

• Experience with NX and Ansys Mechanical.
• Understanding of EMI shielding design, vibrations, and related analysis.
• Experience working in teams combining mechanical and electrical engineers.
