Reporter (Community News)

Location: San Diego, California; coverage of La Jolla and Rancho Bernardo/4S Ranch, with occasional driving between sites and in-person meetings or training.

Salary: $19.23–$21.63 per hour plus a cell phone stipend.

A San Diego media company publishing news, local events, lifestyle features, and community newspapers in print and across digital platforms.

What you will do

• Report and write impactful community news stories for print and digital publication.
• Cover weekly meetings in La Jolla and Rancho Bernardo/4S Ranch, including late-afternoon and early-evening assignments.
• Build and maintain a network of human sources, documents, and data.
• Pitch story ideas and produce daily online copy as needed.
• Take publishable photographs and communicate regularly with a supervising editor.
• Work accurately under deadline while covering government, schools, sports, businesses, entertainment, real estate, health, and science.

Requirements

• Degree or equivalent experience in journalism.
• Strong command of journalistic writing forms, news judgment, and AP style.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments in a deadline-driven environment.
• Strong interpersonal, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
• Availability for shift work and coverage outside normal business hours required.
