Senior Application Mechanical Engineer / Designer (Robotics)

Location: Hybrid, based in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania or Salem, Oregon offices, with travel to customer sites up to 20%. All roles are U.S.-based; current authorization to work in the United States is required.

Salary: $131,000–$170,000 USD per year, plus additional total rewards.

What you will do

• Design customer workcell layouts covering robot placement, material flow, operator access, safety zones, and existing infrastructure.
• Design custom fixtures, carts, jigs, staging equipment, and material-handling interfaces for customer deployments.
• Integrate and test barcode scanners, 2D code readers, sensors, light curtains, and mounting hardware.
• Produce production-quality 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, BOMs, and documentation for fabrication, procurement, and field assembly.
• Conduct customer site surveys and support on-site cell setup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and fixture alignment.
• Adapt end-of-arm tooling and gripper interfaces, collaborate on robot programming parameters, and build reusable deployment designs.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, applications engineering, or designer/drafter roles, supported by a portfolio of deployed designs.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent, including detailed drawings and BOMs.
• Practical experience integrating off-the-shelf scanners, sensors, actuators, and mounting systems into mechanical assemblies.
• Familiarity with sheet metal, machining, weldments, and 3D printing, including cost and lead-time tradeoffs.
• Hands-on ability to assemble fixtures, troubleshoot fit issues, and work alongside field technicians.
• Willingness to travel up to 20% and work effectively with incomplete data, evolving requirements, and multiple customer programs.

Nice to have

• Experience simulating warehouse automation or material-handling equipment.
• Applications engineering experience in robotics or automation, especially collaborative human-robot environments.
• Experience with gripper design, end-of-arm tooling, manipulation interfaces, or industrial integration hardware.
• Familiarity with barcode scanners, safety-rated devices, industrial networking, and robotic workcell safety standards.
