TL;DR
Mechanical Project Engineer (Robotics): Designing and commissioning electromechanical automation systems and end-of-arm tooling with an accent on SolidWorks modeling, BOM management, and floor integration. Location: Must be based in or willing to relocate to the greater Chicago, IL area and work on-site

Compensation: $120,000 - $150,000 USD per year

What you will do

  • Own the mechanical design of automation systems, including palletizing, case packing, and conveyor systems from concept to release.
  • Design, prototype, and test end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) using SolidWorks 3D CAD.
  • Manage organized model structures, assembly hierarchies, and controlled drawing release processes.
  • Lead hands-on system integration and floor commissioning to ensure production readiness.
  • Troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis on electromechanical failures across the deployed robotic fleet.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support product development and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, mechatronics, or robotics for industrial automation.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD, specifically SolidWorks, with experience in complete machine assembly design.
  • Expertise in drafting, GD&T, and creating fabrication-ready BOMs and documentation.
  • Familiarity with industrial robotic platforms such as FANUC, KUKA, ABB, or Universal Robots.
  • Must be located in or willing to relocate to the greater Chicago, IL area and work on-site.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% for field support and implementation.

Nice to have

  • Advanced SolidWorks experience (large assembly management, top-down design).
  • Direct hands-on experience with PLCs, sensors, actuators, and motion control systems.
  • Knowledge of industrial automation protocols (EtherNet/IP, IO-Link) and safety standards (ISO 10218, ANSI/RIA).
  • Experience with PDM/PLM workflows and revision control.
