Engineering Manager (AI)

Location: New York City or San Francisco. Hybrid schedule with four days per week in the office and Wednesdays working from home; occasional availability outside regular business hours is required.

Salary: $215,000–$260,000+ annually, depending on experience and skills, plus equity.

What you will do

• Lead a team responsible for significant product and platform capabilities across frontend, backend, AI services, and real-time collaboration.
• Turn company priorities and ambiguous goals into clear problems, ownership, milestones, and pragmatic delivery plans.
• Review architecture and consequential code, investigate production behavior, and coach engineers on system design, data modeling, debugging, performance, reliability, code quality, and security.
• Develop senior engineers and technical leads through meaningful ownership, feedback, delegation, and career conversations.
• Ensure the team designs for failure modes and peak load, operates shipped systems, responds to incidents, and delivers durable reliability improvements.
• Partner with Product, Design, QA, and engineering leaders to shape scope and deliver software that works in real classrooms.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent technical experience.
• 8+ years of professional engineering experience designing, shipping, and operating production systems.
• 2+ years managing mid-level, senior, and lead software engineers.
• Technical depth comparable to a strong Senior or Staff-level Software Engineer, including recent hands-on experience with substantive code review, production debugging, and targeted implementation.
• Strong skills in system design, APIs, data models, distributed systems, performance, failure modes, production reliability, and incident response.
• Strong product judgment, execution judgment, communication, and experience developing engineers into independent owners.

Nice to have

• Kotlin, Python, React, TypeScript, MySQL, and AWS experience.
• Experience operating high-traffic applications and diagnosing application, database, or infrastructure bottlenecks.
• Full-stack team management with strong backend or systems depth.
• Experience with LLM-backed product capabilities, including evaluation, observability, latency, cost, and failure handling.
• Experience leading teams across regions and time zones or working in education technology.
