Assistant General Counsel

Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States; hybrid role with an on-site presence required

Base compensation: $171,700–$232,300 per year

What you will do

• Provide strategic legal advice for wholesale brokerage, MGA, MGU, program administration, surplus lines, and specialty insurance distribution operations.
• Draft, review, and negotiate brokerage, producer, carrier, program administrator, MGA, MGU, binding authority, confidentiality, and other commercial agreements.
• Develop and maintain template agreements, playbooks, and clause libraries to improve consistency and transaction speed.
• Evaluate legal and reputational risks related to products, programs, carrier relationships, and business opportunities.
• Advise executive leadership and partner with Compliance, Regulatory Affairs, and Operations on legal and regulatory matters.
• Support acquisitions, integrations, strategic transactions, carrier audits, and insurance distribution initiatives.

Requirements

• Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• Five to eight years of legal experience, including significant experience supporting insurance distribution businesses.
• Expertise in wholesale brokerage, surplus lines, specialty insurance, MGA, MGU, and program administrator operations.
• Strong knowledge of insurance regulatory frameworks and experience negotiating sophisticated commercial and insurance-related agreements.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, analytical, issue-spotting, problem-solving, and prioritization skills.
• Ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal guidance to executive and operational stakeholders.

Nice to have

• In-house experience supporting insurance brokers, wholesalers, MGAs, program administrators, carriers, or specialty insurance organizations.
• Experience with insurance-sector mergers and acquisitions.
• Multi-state regulatory and insurance distribution experience.
• Experience with third-party claims administration.
• Interest in using AI and technology-enabled solutions to improve legal efficiency and business support.
