TL;DR
Applied Mechanical Engineer (Nuclear): Supporting the design, evaluation, testing, fabrication, and implementation of mechanical systems for a novel advanced reactor project with an accent on high-temperature reactor vessels, sealing systems, electromechanical mechanisms, and ASME code compliance. Focus on designing for creep and fatigue, managing technical requirements and configuration baselines, and validating fabrication, inspection, assembly, and facility safety requirements.

Location: Remote, with required travel to Idaho Falls, Idaho as needed. US citizenship is required due to government contract and clearance requirements.

What you will do

  • Support the mechanical design and evaluation of a novel advanced nuclear reactor and associated systems.
  • Design high-temperature reactor vessels in accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, including creep and fatigue considerations.
  • Design high-temperature gaskets, sealing systems, bolting, and electromechanical devices such as control rod or drum drive mechanisms.
  • Develop controlled models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions, requirements, and technical baselines using systems and digital engineering approaches.
  • Establish testing, inspection, quality, fabrication, procurement, assembly, and configuration-management requirements.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineers, designers, customers, and analysts on experiments, fabrication, installation, testing, reactor operations, and safety-basis analyses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program with at least 8 years of relevant experience, or a master’s degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency designing mechanical systems in accordance with the ASME B31 series and ASME BPVC.
  • Proven experience designing reactor vessels for high-temperature service with creep and fatigue considerations.
  • Proven experience designing high-temperature gaskets, sealing systems, and bolting.
  • Knowledge of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, models, engineering science, and design production principles.
  • US citizenship required.

Nice to have

  • Experience with novel or advanced nuclear reactor design in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Experience with systems engineering, digital engineering tools, requirements tracking, design parameter management, and configuration management.
  • Experience with control rod or drum drive mechanisms.
  • Experience supporting fabrication, construction, inspection, experiments, testing, reactor operations, or safety-basis analyses.
