Senior Electrochemical Process Engineer (Battery)

Location: Onsite in Warren, Michigan, United States; full-time onsite attendance is required. Domestic travel is required, with travel expected to be less than 25%.

What you will do

• Develop scalable battery cell formation processes for advanced battery cell technologies.
• Analyze interactions between battery cell materials and formation processes and their impact on electrochemical performance.
• Collaborate with Product Engineering, R&D, Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, external partners, and equipment suppliers.
• Translate battery cell requirements into scalable Bills of Process and Bills of Equipment.
• Lead the development of formation processes, tooling, equipment troubleshooting, maintenance, and process improvements.
• Perform root cause analysis, optimize first-time quality using statistical tools, and communicate risks, recommendations, and corrective actions to stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of process development experience with electrochemical systems and 5+ years working with equipment suppliers or external partners.
• 3+ years of hands-on experience with battery cell formation equipment, including protocol scripting, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
• Experience leading complex technical projects and cross-functional teams, using statistical analysis tools such as Minitab, Q-DAS, or JMP.
• Knowledge of electrochemical testing, battery cell manufacturing, GD&T, tolerance stack-up, GPDP, and GM Internal Safety Requirements.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Electrochemical Engineering.
• Direct ownership of formation process development and experience with high-volume battery cell manufacturing.
• Experience specifying and procuring new equipment.
• OpEx or DFSS Black Belt statistical problem-solving training.
