Layer 1 and Data Center Infrastructure Design Engineer

Location: Primarily remote, with travel throughout the United States up to 25% of the time.

What you will do

• Design and validate structured copper and fiber cabling systems, telecommunications rooms, equipment rooms, pathways, patching, termination, labeling, and physical network topologies.
• Design data center rack layouts, power and cooling requirements, grounding and bonding, rack cabling, cable management, and wireless access point infrastructure.
• Review drawings, specifications, submittals, and proposed designs for accuracy, capacity, resiliency, installation risks, and compliance with project requirements.
• Support customer discussions, site surveys, infrastructure assessments, pre-sales activities, bills of materials, and technical statements of work.
• Plan Smart Hands installations and coordinate with IT, networking, facilities, security, construction stakeholders, vendors, and installation teams.
• Participate in design reviews, commissioning, and acceptance activities to verify that completed infrastructure meets approved designs and performance objectives.

Requirements

• Professional experience designing, reviewing, installing, or supporting enterprise physical network infrastructure.
• Strong knowledge of copper termination, patching, testing, single-mode and multimode fiber, connectors, pathways, topology, and deployment requirements.
• Experience with data center racks, power and cooling, grounding and bonding, telecommunications spaces, cable management, and network, storage, server, and security equipment.
• Experience supporting wireless deployments and interpreting architectural, electrical, telecommunications, and network drawings.
• Familiarity with BICSI, TIA, ANSI, IEEE, and manufacturer standards and best practices.
• Ability to create engineering and installation documentation, communicate with customers and vendors, work primarily remotely, and travel within the United States up to 25% of the time.

Nice to have

• Federal or Department of Defense project experience involving NIPR, SIPR, JWICS, cybersecurity, secure infrastructure, or related documentation requirements.
• Experience with secure fiber solutions, wireless site surveys, and mission-critical environments such as healthcare or higher education.
• Experience coordinating Layer 1 infrastructure with AV-over-IP, unified communications, security, building systems, or other IP-based technologies.
• BICSI, Cisco, fiber optic, or manufacturer certifications and training.
