Design Engineer (AI)

Location: United States. Hybrid in-office anchor days on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday for employees within commuting distance of offices in San Francisco, New York, London, or Berlin; fully remote beyond that distance.

Salary: $208,000–$312,000 annual base pay for San Francisco; compensation may be adjusted based on employee location.

What you will do

• Own product design and frontend implementation for AI Gateway, from model discovery and first successful requests to production operations.
• Design and build production experiences across the website, dashboard, CLI, and APIs.
• Make models, providers, credentials, routing, budgets, logs, performance, privacy, and governance understandable.
• Work with customers, product management, and engineering to identify problems, define success, and improve shipped products.
• Own post-launch quality, including visual and interaction design, accessibility, performance, resilience, instrumentation, and edge cases.
• Use coding agents to explore and implement ideas while testing, debugging, and taking responsibility for the resulting code.

Requirements

• Portfolio or work history demonstrating personally identified, designed, built, and shipped products.
• Production-quality web application experience with React and TypeScript in large codebases.
• Strong visual and interaction design skills for technical or data-rich products.
• Ability to work across graphical interfaces, CLI workflows, API behavior, and implementation details.
• Experience using customer research and product data to make decisions and communicate design reasoning.
• Ability to test, debug, and take responsibility for code produced with coding agents.

Nice to have

• Experience with developer tools, infrastructure products, model marketplaces, or observability.
• Experience with AI models, providers, inference platforms, guardrails, or AI application tooling.
• Experience with APIs, command-line tools, structured product content, or agent-facing interfaces.
• Experience building an application or agent with Vercel AI SDK or AI Gateway.
