TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer - Thermal Design (Thermal Management/CFD): Designing and validating thermal architectures for sealed, rugged electronics used in harsh, mission-critical environments with an accent on heat transfer, passive cooling, simulation, and production-ready hardware. Focus on predicting component temperatures, correlating CFD models with test data, designing for extreme temperatures, and meeting manufacturing and field-service constraints.

Location: On-site in Ottawa, Canada

Company

hirify.global builds rugged, mission-critical systems for the Canadian Armed Forces and allied operators.

What you will do

  • Design thermal management solutions for sealed, rugged electronics, including heat sinks, heat spreaders, thermal interface materials, and conduction paths.
  • Perform thermal analysis, CFD simulation, and engineering calculations to predict component temperatures and identify hot spots across extreme conditions.
  • Collaborate with electrical and systems engineers on power dissipation, component placement, materials, and system-level thermal performance.
  • Plan and execute thermal testing, correlate models with test data, and drive design improvements based on test and field feedback.
  • Develop SolidWorks CAD models, engineering calculations, drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Work with mechanical, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to meet cost, weight, size, DFM, DFA, and production requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • 4–7 years of experience in thermal design and analysis for electronic systems, preferably rugged, sealed, or harsh-environment hardware.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and experience with thermal simulation or CFD tools such as ANSYS Icepak, Fluent, Simcenter FloTHERM, or SolidWorks Flow Simulation.
  • Strong knowledge of heat transfer, thermal management, materials, and manufacturing processes including machining, extrusion, and die casting.
  • Experience with thermal testing and instrumentation, including thermocouples, infrared thermography, environmental chambers, and model correlation.
  • Ability to design reliable thermal hardware and passive cooling or heating solutions for sub-zero environments while minimizing power draw.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-810 and other environmental test standards for rugged electronics.
  • Defence background; no defence experience is required.

Culture & Benefits

  • High-trust environment with short feedback loops and rapid iteration.
  • Direct interaction with operators and systems already deployed with the Canadian Armed Forces.
  • Competitive base salary and company equity.
  • Comprehensive health benefits.
  • Additional equity for full-time employees based on impact.

Hiring process

  • AI tools may support screening and response review.
  • Final hiring decisions are made by people in accordance with applicable Canadian privacy and employment laws.
