Software Engineer (Ruby)

Location: Chicago, Illinois — hybrid, with 3 days in the office

Salary: $130,000–$150,000 per year, plus a discretionary performance bonus of 8–12% of base salary.

A fintech company building retail brokerage, trading, financial education, forex, and cryptocurrency products as part of IG Group.

What you will do

• Build, maintain, and evolve services in a distributed architecture supporting retail brokerage technology.
• Work across Ruby, Java, JavaScript, and other parts of the trading application stack.
• Design for failure modes, latency, performance, stability, and data consistency.
• Translate requirements and technical direction into production-quality code.
• Write comprehensive tests, troubleshoot issues, and provide light infrastructure support.
• Contribute to peer reviews and guide junior engineers on implementation and language-specific questions.

Requirements

• Professional software engineering experience in a team environment.
• At least 2 years of professional Ruby experience, or equivalent experience with another object-oriented language such as Java, together with a commitment to work primarily in Ruby.
• Production experience with at least one relevant language or framework.
• Experience building or operating distributed systems.
• Ability to learn new languages, frameworks, and technologies quickly.
• Accountability, ownership, curiosity, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Nice to have

• Experience with Grape or Ruby outside Rails.
• Frontend experience with Svelte or micro-frontend architectures.
• Knowledge of application security and secure coding practices.
