Staff Compute & Controls Systems Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles)

Zoox is developing a fully autonomous vehicle fleet and the supporting mobility-as-a-service ecosystem.

What you will do

• Define traceable compute and controls requirements from product goals and maintain system documentation.
• Drive tradeoff analysis and consensus on compute architecture for current and future autonomous vehicle platforms.
• Work with hardware, software, firmware, product, manufacturing, safety, and test teams to verify requirements throughout development.
• Lead compute and autonomy system sign-off, including verification and validation planning and test-result analysis.
• Conduct system FMEA, FMEDA, and failure-mode analysis to identify risks and improve diagnostic coverage.
• Support root-cause analysis of safety-related field failures and functional safety activities aligned with ISO 26262.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s, master’s, or equivalent degree in aerospace, automotive, robotics, computer science, electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering.
• 8+ years of relevant staff-level experience in automotive, ADAS, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, or robotics.
• Experience with systems-level design, validation, and safety analysis for complex mission-critical systems with fail-operational redundancy.
• Strong electrical engineering fundamentals, including x86 and ARM compute architectures, vehicle communication protocols, high-speed signals, sensing, and power electronics.
• Experience with FMEDA or FMEA for safety-critical systems and knowledge of ISO 26262 and ISO 21448.

Nice to have

• PhD in a related technical field.
• Experience with high-assurance compute solutions, GPU hardware, and AI models for perception, behavior planning, or trajectory planning.
• Experience with sensor interface design, data-throughput analysis, bandwidth, latency, timing, and synchronization requirements.
• Experience with hazard analysis, functional decomposition, validation, and verification.
