Senior Software Engineer (Go)

Location: Remote for candidates outside the Bay Area; hybrid for candidates within commuting distance to San Francisco, with office attendance on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. All candidates must be based in the United States and authorized to work there.

Salary: $165,500–$247,500 per year, depending on role level and location tier.

What you will do

• Build the next generation of the ngrok Agent, extending its redesigned architecture with networking, integrations, and remote-management capabilities.
• Design for latency, throughput, correctness, and safe failure handling across unreliable networks, broken configurations, and resource-constrained machines.
• Develop and maintain SDKs and embeddable agent components that are stable, easy to integrate, and difficult to misuse.
• Improve diagnostics, logging, metrics, and observability to explain Agent behavior in production environments.
• Ensure consistent operation across developer laptops, servers, CI systems, containers, and varied hardware.
• Collaborate with product, platform, and support teams to investigate failures and improve developer experience.

Requirements

• Experience building systems-level software that operates reliably under pressure.
• Strong proficiency in Go, Rust, C/C++, or Java; Go experience is preferred.
• Ability to reason about reliability, security, performance, and engineering tradeoffs.
• Interest in debugging complex systems and explaining technical decisions clearly.
• Care for developer experience in addition to technical correctness.
• US-based work authorization is required; permanent authorization without current or future visa sponsorship is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with networking, proxies, or agents.
• Experience developing SDKs or embeddable runtimes.
• Experience with observability tooling or widely used open-source systems.
