Principal Mechanical Engineer (Optomechanical)

Location: San Diego, California, United States. This onsite role requires legal authorization to access controlled technology under United States export regulations before work begins.

What you will do

• Lead the specification, architecture, design, integration, and validation of complex optomechanical modules and subsystems.
• Develop technology roadmaps, feasibility studies, sustaining strategies, and long-term engineering decisions.
• Direct multidisciplinary teams through concept development, detailed design, testing, production introduction, release, and product support.
• Design mechanical and optomechanical parts, assemblies, fixtures, and alignment solutions.
• Perform tolerance analysis, finite element analysis, system troubleshooting, root cause investigations, and corrective actions.
• Lead product upgrades, retrofit solutions, engineering changes, obsolescence management, and reliability improvements while mentoring engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• 10–15 years of relevant engineering experience in advanced mechanical design, system integration, technical leadership, and product lifecycle work.
• Experience with machined, sheet metal, molded, additive-manufactured, and flexure-based components and assemblies.
• Proficiency with three-dimensional computer-aided design, detailed engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis, documentation control, and engineering change processes.
• Experience with structural, thermal, vibration, or fluid dynamics finite element analysis and released-product support.
• Must be legally authorized to access controlled technology in the United States before beginning work.

Nice to have

• Master’s or doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
• Experience with PTC Creo.
• Familiarity with industrial laser systems, optomechanical systems, or semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
