Complex Facility Process Engineer (Oil & Gas Refining)

Location: El Segundo, California, United States. The role supports refinery operations on site and may require off-hours response, work at heights, and confined-space entry. Relocation may be considered; expatriate assignments will not be considered.

Salary: $158,600–$274,800 per year. Employment is subject to local United States payroll. Visa sponsorship is not available, and candidates on time-limited visa status will not be considered.

What you will do

• Provide process troubleshooting, technical recommendations, engineering tools, procedures, and support for refinery operations.
• Steward complex process initiatives and identify improvement opportunities using economic metrics and cost/value tradeoffs.
• Advise on test runs, process-variable optimization, plant-performance evaluation, and adoption of technologies that improve reliability and profitability.
• Support planned unit turnarounds, management of change, operating procedures, and process safety information accuracy.
• Lead investigations and cross-refinery troubleshooting initiatives.
• Mentor unit process engineers and early-career engineers while supporting cross-division technical efforts.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in the downstream oil and gas refining industry.
• Practical expertise in mass transfer and distillation, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, process control, and kinetics.
• Experience with PHA, IPR/ROI, LOPA, or similar process safety and engineering studies.
• Strong communication and coaching skills, with the ability to work independently, influence decisions, build consensus, meet critical deadlines, and troubleshoot complex operational issues.
• Must be eligible for local United States employment; visa sponsorship and time-limited visa status are not accepted.

Nice to have

• Supervisory, turnaround leadership, multi-site, refinery economics, oils planning, PSM, or reliability experience.
• Subject matter expertise in at least one PHA.
• Experience with PI, Seeq, PROII, hydraulics, process simulation, or data visualization tools.
• Experience with TapRoot or WhyTree incident-investigation methodologies.
• Participation in industry networks or committees such as AFPM.
