System Particle Control Hardware Engineer/Scientist (Semiconductor Equipment)

Location: Beverly, Massachusetts, United States. Full-time onsite role with international travel of 10–25% to support customer upgrades and testing.

Base salary: $130,800–$196,200 per year, plus eligibility for the Axcelis Team Incentive bonus plan and benefits for regular employees working 20+ hours per week.

What you will do

• Lead investigations into particle-related yield excursions and defectivity issues using particle counters, SEM/EDX, VPD ICP-MS, and optical inspection.
• Design and qualify precision mechanical components for semiconductor implantation system modules.
• Develop materials, coatings, seals, and surface finishes for ultra-clean applications.
• Analyze wear, friction, vibration, and system interfaces to reduce particle generation.
• Collaborate with process, design, equipment engineering, field support, customers, and suppliers on contamination specifications and corrective actions.
• Support audits, customer inquiries, laboratory work, hardware installations, and international customer-site testing.

Requirements

• Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical, Aerospace, Materials, or Manufacturing Engineering, or an equivalent field.
• 3–10 years of hardware development experience in semiconductor manufacturing, semiconductor equipment, vacuum systems, or contamination-sensitive industries.
• Hands-on experience operating sophisticated systems similar to semiconductor equipment.
• Working knowledge of contamination control, particle-generation mechanisms, cleanroom operations, vacuum system design, precision mechanical assemblies, and wafer handling systems.
• Proficiency with CAD and engineering documentation, including Creo or similar tools; experience with Windchill and Ansys is relevant.
• Experience with root-cause analysis, statistical analysis, statistical process control, supplier collaboration, laboratory work, and hardware installation.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of graphite, graphite surface treatments, and semiconductor chamber shield design.
• Knowledge of particle types in semiconductor systems and mitigation methods.
