Quantum Scientist

Location: Oxford, United Kingdom office with the option to work a few days a week remotely. Travel up to 5%.

What you will do

• Prototype and characterise coherent-control and cooling schemes for trapped-ion qubits using laser and microwave fields.
• Calibrate and benchmark quantum systems to improve the fidelity of gate operations, ion transport, and complete circuits.
• Validate emerging trap technologies, including integrated electronics and photonics for scalable architectures.
• Analyse experimental data and debug complex hardware/software interactions to improve qubit reliability.
• Document and communicate findings while supporting research and development goals.

Requirements

• PhD in physics or a related discipline with a strong foundation in atomic or qubit-related physics.
• Experience in experimental AMO physics or quantum computing; trapped-ion experience is beneficial but not essential.
• Background in quantum control, calibration, benchmarking, coherent control, spectroscopy, control-hardware characterisation, or quantum circuits on hardware.
• Strong programming and data-analysis skills; Python or Rust experience is desirable.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-moving technical team.
• Scientific communication experience through publications, talks, or conferences is advantageous.

Nice to have

• Postdoctoral or industry experience.
• Experience with trapped ions, Python, Rust, and scientific publications or conference presentations.
