TL;DR
Robotics Controls & Autonomy Interns (Robotics): Developing and testing control algorithms and production-level software for the OTTAVA robotic surgical system with an accent on C++, real-time safety-critical applications, kinematics, dynamics, and classical control. Focus on implementing motion and control algorithms, debugging robotic software, and integrating robotics, AI, perception, and embedded systems for surgical technology.

Location: Santa Clara, California, United States; hybrid work arrangement.

Salary: $32/hour for Sophomores, $35.50/hour for Juniors, $39/hour for Seniors, $46.50/hour for Master's students, and $61/hour for PhD students.

What you will do

  • Develop, implement, and test control algorithms for complex robotic systems.
  • Develop C++ software for real-time, safety-critical applications.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, debugging, and software quality activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams on software architecture and system requirements.
  • Document software designs, algorithms, and implementation details.

Requirements

  • Permanent US work authorization is required without current or future sponsorship.
  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's, graduate, or PhD program and returning to an academic program after the internship.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Available for a full-time, 40-hour workweek during one of the specified internship terms: June 1–August 20, 2027, or June 21–September 10, 2027.
  • Hands-on experience with robotic hardware and experience with C++, Python, or similar languages.
  • Knowledge of forward and inverse kinematics, dynamics, classical control theory, and estimation techniques.

Nice to have

  • Experience with control systems, perception, AI/ML, or embedded firmware.
  • Familiarity with ROS, simulation tools, or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Experience applying classical mechanics analysis techniques in real-world applications.
  • Ability to learn and apply new AI tools and platforms.
