Senior Backend Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Carlos, California, with 3+ days per week onsite and remote work permitted on remaining days. All work must be performed in the United States.

Salary: $173,000–$225,000 annually, plus equity.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and maintain backend services and APIs for web and mobile applications.
• Build reliable and scalable production backend systems with senior engineers.
• Integrate internal and external data sources, including real-time and batch data pipelines.
• Collaborate with product managers and cross-functional partners on user-facing backend features.
• Contribute to code reviews and backend architecture practices.
• Improve reliability, performance, and maintainability through testing, monitoring, and documentation.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building backend systems, or equivalent experience through internships, projects, or coursework.
• Experience with Python or JavaScript/TypeScript with Node.js.
• Experience designing or consuming APIs and working with databases or data stores.
• Exposure to production environments and reliability, performance, and security fundamentals.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to collaborate in a fast-moving environment.
• Must qualify as a U.S. Person under U.S. export control regulations and be able to perform all work in the United States.

Nice to have

• Passion for aviation and improving air travel efficiency and safety.
• Experience with data pipelines, real-time data systems, or distributed systems.
• Interest in machine learning, data-intensive systems, or large-scale data processing.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms, CI/CD workflows, or DevOps concepts.
